Agricultural Implements

Agriculture has changed a lot before and after industrialization. Before industrialization amateur tools were used for different functions in agriculture. At that time, maintenance of the agricultural field, cultivation of crops, and removal of weeds were difficult tasks which were mainly performed with bare hands. Physical labor was much more intense in the case of agriculture at the time. Also, the size of the tools that were used at that time was huge and was heavy. They were made of stones and wood and were less effective. After industrialization, the process of agriculture changed completely. Due to technical advancements, newer machinery gets introduced in this field which is more effective. These are known as agricultural implements which have made the work of farmers easy.

What are farm implements?

The machines that have been introduced in the field of agriculture to reduce human labor are farm implements. Some of the machines or tools used as agricultural implements are harvesters, disk harrows, drag, cultivators, spades, pickage, plough, and so on. These tools have high demands in the market of countries like India, where agriculture and farming serve as the primary occupations for 70% of the total population. Therefore, agricultural implementations are highly recommended in these countries.

What are the 5 farm implements?

There are various farm implements that are used nowadays to reduce the labor of the farmers in the agricultural field. These are required in each step of agriculture. Some of the farm implements are described here-

Preparation of the soil: This is the primary and most important step in the case of agriculture. This step has a significant role in the field as this results in deeper penetration in the soil so that the plant roots can absorb water from the soil easily. It also consists of the removal of weeds and boulders and loosening of the soil. Loosening of soil results in better aeration and mineral enrichment of the agricultural field. In this process, agricultural implements like ploughs, cultivators, and hoes are used. A plough, made of wood, helps in deeper penetration and weed removal. A cultivator is a machine that does the same and reduces manual labor.

Sowing: Sowing seeds is the second step in agriculture. The sowing of seeds is done by using a funnel-shaped device that keeps the seed. The seed enters the pipe end of the funnel and gets separated to avoid clustered sowing. The pipe of the file penetrated the soil and sowed the seeds deep. Sowing is also done by using a seed drill. Seed drills are machines that help in the proper sowing of seeds at appropriate depth and distance. It also prevents damage to seeds during the process.

Irrigation machinery: This is one of the most essential steps in agriculture. It consists of a pump that draws water out from the soil. Different types of irrigation tools are there. One of the most important tools is the sprinkler in which perpendicular pipes with a nozzle rotate and water drips out from the nozzle. The dripping irrigation system is also used in some places where water oozes out from small holes. These two modern systems are used nowadays for irrigation purposes to save water and provide an ample amount of water to the plants.

Harvesting: This process consists of cutting crops after maturation of the crops. Previously, a sickle was used for the purpose which is made up of wood and metal. Nowadays, harvesters are used for the same. Sometimes a combine is used which is a combination of harvesters and threshers, which perform both threshing and harvesting in the agricultural field at the same time.

Benefits of agricultural implements:

Agricultural implements are beneficial to the farmers in many ways:

  • Labour work has decreased to a huge extent.
  • Manual work has been decreased in many folds.
  • Crop production has been done nowadays more efficiently after the implementation of agricultural implements.
  • It reduces labor costs.
  • Agriculture implements require one-time investments.
  • It increases the overall profit of the farmers.
  • It enhances the production of agricultural industries after the introduction of agricultural implements.

Conclusion:

After industrialization, the process of agriculture changed completely. Due to technical advancements, newer machinery gets introduced in this field which is more effective. These are known as agricultural implements which have made the work of farmers easy. Some of the machines or tools used as agricultural implements are harvesters, disk harrows, drag, cultivators, spades, pickage, plough, and so on. These tools have high demands in the market of countries like India, where agriculture and farming serve as the primary occupations for 70% of the total population. But some of these tools are difficult to operate. Therefore, proper training is necessary to provide to the farmers.
