INTRODUCTION
The leopard or scientifically Panthera Pardus is one of the five surviving classes belonging to the genus Panthera, a participant of the cat family, Felidae. It exists in an extensive area in sub-Saharan Africa, in some regions of Western and Central Asia, Southern Russia, and on the Indian subcontinent to Southeastern and Eastern Asia. It is registered as ‘Vulnerable’ as per the IUCN Red List since populations of leopards are endangered by habitat loss and destruction, and are deteriorating in large parts of the globe.
The cheetah or scientifically Acinonyx jubatus is a big cat inherent to Africa and central Iran. It is renowned as the fastest terrestrial animal, predictable to be skilled of running at 80 to 128 km/hr. or 50 to 80 mph with the fastest consistently recorded speeds being 93 km/hr. and 98 km/hr. or 58 mph and 61 mph, and as such has numerous editions for speed, including a light physique, long tinny legs, and a long tail.
LEOPARDS
andLeopards, or Panthera Pardus, also called panthers, are big cats closely associated with the lion, tiger, jaguar. The name leopard was initially agreed to by the cat now called cheetah which is by name called the hunting leopard. It was once assumed to be an interchange between the lion and the pard. The term pard was ultimately exchanged by the name leopard.
CHARACTERISTICS OF LEOPARD
The characteristics of leopard are as follows:
- They are bulky and very active cats with more solid limbs.
- The color differs from territory to territory. The darker ones originate in forests and softer ones exist in dry and exposed territories. Dark spots are found on the covering of their body with contrasts of orange, light cream, grey, and tan-colored skin.
- They have lengthy and dense hair extensions at their end.
- Their ears are short and curved, which are movable to examine the resonances around them.
- They have yellowish-green eyes.
- The front feet are bigger than the back feet with shrill and rounded claws. It has five figures in the front feet and four in the back feet.
- A male leopard weighs nearly 37 to 90 kgs, whereas female leopards weigh about 28 to 6 kgs.
- The height is nearly 3 feet to 6.5 feet, and it is equal in both male and female leopards.
CHEETAHS
Cheetah, or Acinonyx jubatus, is among one of the most commonly known varieties of cats, known particularly for its speediness. Races of cheetahs have been calculated at an extreme of 114 km or 71 miles per sixty minutes, and they habitually scope speeds of 80–100 km per sixty minutes while chasing for their victim. Almost all the cheetahs exist in the wildlife in Africa.
Cheetahs are covered nearly wholly with small black spots on the skin of soft yellow color and have a white underbelly. Their appearances are notable by prominent black lines that arc from the inner corner of each eye to the outer corners of the mouth, as an identified stream of dark tears.
CHARACTERISTICS OF CHEETAHS
- Cheetahs have distinguishing spots and black, tear-shaped lines that extend from the inner corner of each eye to the mouth.
- Cheetahs have small curved and smooth heads, extended necks, deep chests, and claws that are not capable of withdrawing back.
- The legs of the cheetah are elongated, slender, and well-developed. These features help the cheetah to travel at brilliant marks of speed.
- They have special pads on their bottoms to support grip for the cheetah. Regardless of their speed capacity, cheetahs cannot run at their maximum speed for long distances since there is a risk of overheating their pads.
- The mass of cheetahs on average is 110 to 140 pounds.
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN LEOPARDS AND CHEETAH
Although the leopards and cheetah belong to the family of big cats, there are still some basic differences between them. Some of them are discussed below:
- While cheetahs desire to chase in the daytime, leopards generally chase during the night but can also seldom chase in the daylight if a chance comes by itself. This is because leopards have numerous cells in their eyes that perceive less color as they are delicate to light but permit them to sense movement and figure effortlessly in the dark.
- The most common difference between these two animals is the shapes on their skin. They may appear to have spots, but in reality, a leopard has rosettes which are rose-like patterns whereas cheetahs have dense round or oval patterns of spots.
- Cheetahs are the fastest land animals. They can grasp speeds of up to 120 km/h or 75 mph and have the capacity to rush from 0 to 103 km/hr. in just three seconds. Leopards, on the other side, only can grasp a top speed of about 58 km/hr. or 37 mph. They have folding claws which allow them to be excellent climbers. They are also very good swimmers.
- Leopards are the shortest of the big cats, even though they are solid and massive. They are sufficiently strong to pull their victim up trees to defend their meal. Cheetah is of much less weight and taller, which backs to their skill to run fast. In the forests, a leopard can hunt off any cheetah that crosses its region.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LEOPARD JAGUAR AND CHEETAH
The differences between leopard, cheetah, and jaguar are as follows:
Taxonomic names
The taxonomic or biological names of each species are as follows:
Jaguar is Panthera Onca. Leopard is Panthera Pardus. Cheetah is Acinonyx Jubatus.
Physical differences
Jaguars are the chief of the three big cats, with a regular height of 75 cm or 29.5 inches and length of between 150 to 180 cm. They also have an extended tail of about 70 to 90 cm.
The weight and dimensions of leopards differ significantly between males and females. The males are of 30 to 65 kg and can lengthen up to more than 2 meters or 78 inches. Females have body weights of 17 to 58 kg, with a normal length of 1.8 meters or 70 inches, so they are generally smaller than jaguars.
Talking about the cheetahs, their weight is between 20 and 72 kg, while their measurement is between 112 and 150 cm or 44 to 59 inches and a height of 67 to 94 cm or 26 to 37 inches.
Genus of the Animals
They belong to the family of cats but belong to a different genus. Regarding the genus, the cheetah resembles Acinonyx, while the jaguar and leopard belong to the genus Panthera.
