Lyophilic colloid coagulation

Composition and Coagulation of Lyophilic Sols

Coagulation is the process of colloidal particles aggregating or accumulating to form a precipitate.

Metals, their sulphides, and other substances cannot simply be mixed with the dispersion medium to generate a colloidal solution. Their colloidal solutions are created using some unique techniques. Lyophobic sols are a type of lyophobic sol. Colloidal solutions of this type always have a charge attached to them. The stability of colloidal sols is determined by the charge existing on them. If the charge on the sol can be removed, the particles become closer to one another, forming aggregates that precipitate under gravity. Coagulation or precipitation is the term for the process of particles accumulating and settling down.

Lyophilic Sols

When the dispersed phase has a greater affinity for the dispersion medium, the colloids are referred to as lyophilic, and when the dispersion medium is water, the colloids are referred to as hydrophilic. Lyophilic colloids are those that have a greater affinity for the solvent in which they are dispersed. Natural colloids are another term for them. This category includes substances such as proteins, carbohydrates, and rubber, among others.

  • Lithophilic sols are stable because of the charge and solvation that the colloidal particles have on the liquid surface.
  • On this premise, the following are the methods for coagulating lyophilic sol:
  • By adding an electrolyte and a suitable solvent, you can make a solution.
  • A lyophilic sol is formed as a result of these actions.
  • Colloids are shielded from harm.
  • The addition of a lyophilic sol to a lyophobic sol results in a layer of lyophilic particles surrounding the lyophobic particles, which protects the latter from electrolytes.
  • Because of this one-of-a-kind characteristic of Lyophilic colloids, they are referred to as protective colloids.

Colloidal Solution is used in a variety of applications:

  • Sewage Removal and Disposal
  • Colloidal particles of dirt, dust, and other contaminants have an electric charge.
  • When sewage is allowed to travel over metallic plates that have been charged to a high potential, the colloidal particles move to the electrode that has been charged in the opposite direction and precipitate.
  • As a result, the sewage water is cleansed.

Preparation of Water for Use in the Well

When alum is added to muddy water, the negatively charged particles of the colloid are neutralised by the ions present in the solution. As a result, the dirt particles fall to the bottom of the tank and the water is filtered and treated.

Precipitation Due to Smoke

Smoke particles are colloidal carbon particles that are electrically charged and suspended in the air.

Chimney smoke is permitted to travel through a chamber that contains a number of metallic plates that are connected to a source of high potential. This type of arrangement is referred to as a Cottrell’s Precipitator.

Conclusion

Lyophilic means ‘liquid loving’. Those sols inside which dispersed phase and dispersion medium (water) exhibit considerable attraction between them are called lyophilic sols. For example, colloidal solution created by dissolving starch in water.
